Q9550 vs. E2220

Postby epichero on Sat Aug 22, 2009 4:39 am

Just got and installed the Q9550, replacing my overclocked E2220.

Overall, I think this will be an easy return. Sure, the Q9550 has 12 times the L2 cache, but the difference only seems nominal in comparison. It's faster, but not by that much of an extent. I thought that Virtual PC would run better but I couldn't notice a difference from my limited testing. Plus, overclocking this thing would take temperatures to 40+.

The E2220, when overclocked, wasn't as fast overall, but it definitely got the job done. Overclocking would set temperatures between 30-34.

What I don't understand is what someone with a Core i7 is doing unless they do very processor-intensive tasks. But that would, I assume, really only apply to video editing or graphic design. All the noobs I meet at the store who buy a Core i7 are just wasting their money. If you want great gaming, put your cash into graphics first. If you want great performance, put your cash into memory.

And thanks to Komet for recommending the E.

I don't really recall the recommendation, but your experiences seem to fall in line with what I suspected.

L2 cache has never shown to be that big of a deal. My processer with 1MB of L2 at 3.1Ghz is just as fast as the same processor with 4MB of L2 at 3.0Ghz.

And like you said, lots of CPU is only beneficial if you need lots. For games, which are mainly optimized for only dual core support, graphics should come first.

I've been holding off on upgrading to more than two cores. Glad to see I'm not really missing out on anything major.

Still rocking my E2140! and I'm only using 2gb's of ram... cause you know... ballistix fails all teh time.

I don't play any games besides live for speed with my G25.... so I dunno, I might upgrade if there's something quite interesting and cheap on the i5 platform... but we'll see :P

I noticed a good performance increase in the high end games when i upgraded my e4400 to a q6600.
e4400 was at 3GHz, q6600 at 3.51GHz.
Also a very notable difference when ripping DVDs or converting media files.
Have you tried turing it off and on again?
