Quick PSU/Case Question

Postby FrozenInferno on Fri Feb 05, 2010 5:25 pm

I'm currently putting together a build for my brother. He wants a smaller machine that can still do what he wants. I've gotten all of the major components within his budget. Now, I'm looking at cases and PSUs. My main question is, will a standard ATX12V PSU fit into a microATX mini-tower? Because I was looking at microATX PSUs and I didn't see any big-names in the list, which makes me wonder: if it's a standard market, wouldn't the big-names be in there?

The parts in question:
The CoolerMaster microATX mini-tower
The CoolerMaster 460W ATX12V PSU

I think mATX psus are just shorter than normal ones, so you should see how much length you've got inside that case to work with. It appears that an ATX psu would fit.

I don't know why anyone would want a smaller machine unless they're really crammed for space. An Antec Sonata III, for example, is very low profile and you wont have to worry about future upgradability as much.

Anyways, to answer your question, I read through the reviews for that case, and several people stated that they installed ATX power supplies. I would recommend looking at what they wrote for an idea of the kind of PSU to get. While looking at the reviews, a few people stated that the power cables weren't long enough, so I would definitely consider that as well.

Or say fuck it and go with the Sonata. Right now it's on sale at $99 and from my experience with it, you wont need extension cables and it's amazing. Add these fans and you're in business:
