Tri-monitor support

Postby epichero on Mon Jun 07, 2010 9:31 pm

I'm thinking about getting a third monitor for my desk, but I will need a new video card. Unless I want to replace my motherboard with a CrossFire setup and/or upgrade my PSU, this is the option I'm looking to get (single card):

I'm doing this mostly to expand my home lab to three monitors, but wouldn't mind playing some games every once in a while that would span the monitors.

The things I've read say that the 5770 wouldn't be powerful enough or that I'll need to get an active displayport adapter. Any thoughts on this? I'm assuming that Eyefinitiy is the first technology that would let you achieve spanning resolutions (ie, 5760 x 1080), and that current games are programmed to recognize this. Otherwise, you can't do it. True?

If its any help, most of the videos on youtube I've seen use Eyefinity on 3 monitors (mostly games like crysis, HAWX, WoW, ...).

IIRC you'll need at least one monitor with a native display port.

Now I assume this "limitation" carries over to the 5770. As for the powerfullness issue of the card I cant say much.

You'll want more than a 5770 for triple monitors. That huge resolution will make even the high end cards stutter with too much AA. I think they were all running displayport into some sort of adapter that then went into the video card when I saw the setup at GDC.

Then again with a huge resolution AA becomes less of a must. However I do agree that a better card would be "safer"

Considering he mentionned the displayport constraint in his original post I believe this is what he was referring to from the start.
